What is a software factory?

A software factory is a system that automates parts of the software development lifecycle with agents. There are different approaches to the software factory — some are goal-driven, with one supervisor agent directing subagents toward a stated goal; others use staged automation, with explicit gates at each step so changes stay measurable and reversible; others focus on learning infrastructure, where organizational memory and production outcomes improve each future run.

Mastra Factory is built with explicit gates around intake, triage, planning, building, review, and completion, with the option to implement full /goal mode via subagents, durable background agents, and shared state.

Is Mastra Factory open source?

Yes, Mastra Factory is open source. A Factory project uses the Mastra platform for auth, database, and sandboxes from the start, but the Mastra server, Factory UI, and Studio all run locally until you deploy them with mastra deploy.

Where can I deploy Mastra Factory?

The Mastra platform will automatically deploy your Factory during project setup. You can also host your Factory on your own infrastructure. Check out the docs for more info about deployment.

What can you build with the Mastra Factory?

Out of the box, Mastra Factory is built for software development: building features, fixing bugs, refactoring code, writing tests, and taking work from an issue through a reviewed pull request.

Because Factory is open source and built on Mastra, you can also adapt its agents, tools, workflows, and UI to other multi-step processes, for example content production, research, or data analysis.

How do I use Mastra Factory with my team?

Teams connect a GitHub organization and repository, optionally a Linear project, and a model provider, then work through a shared cloud dashboard instead of one person's terminal. Team members answer the agent's questions during Triage, approve or edit plans during Planning, and review and merge pull requests during Review. Each work item keeps its own session, so the team has a place to continue the product and technical conversation tied to that issue.

Can I use Mastra Factory with an existing codebase?

Yes. Connect Mastra Factory to an existing GitHub repository and it can pick up work from GitHub or Linear issues, inspect the codebase, plan changes, implement them, run checks, and open pull requests.

How much control do I have over what the agents do?

Mastra Factory keeps humans in the loop at key stages. You can answer questions during Triage, review and edit the plan before implementation starts, and decide whether to merge the final pull request. The agent handles the work between those checkpoints, but you stay in control of what gets built and shipped.
